How to Make Better AI Art in MidJourney Using Style, View, and Light

MidJourney makes it easy (and fun!) to turn ideas into artwork — but sometimes, the magic is in the details. Want your images to stand out even more? It all starts with smarter prompts.

In this post, I’ll show you how to boost your AI art using three key ingredients: style, view, and light. I've learned this from an online lesson I took. Let’s break them down and explore how to make your images pop.

Start with the Basics

Here’s a simple MidJourney command:

🖼️ Prompt:
/imagine Create an image of a forest.

This gives you a basic image. But if you want more control over how it looks, let’s go further.

Add an Artistic Style

Want a painting look? Maybe something minimal or pixelated? Add a style right in your prompt!

🎨 Prompt:
/imagine Create an image of a forest in the style of watercolor painting.

MidJourney also offers style presets like:

Turbo, Realistic, Artistic, Anime, Icon, Logo, Pixel Art, Paper Cut, Sticker, Book Cover, Sketch, Flat Style, Vector Art, Doodle, Minimal, Scribble, Product Design

You can select these on the interface or type them into your prompt manually.

Use the --s Parameter to Control Stylization

Want to control how artistic or realistic your output is? Use the --s (stylize) parameter with a number between 0 and 1000.

  • Low value = less artistic but consistent with your prompt

  • High value = more artistic flair and detail

🎨 Less stylized prompt:
/imagine forest in the style of watercolor painting --s 200

🎨 Highly stylized prompt:
/imagine forest in the style of watercolor painting --s 900

Simplify with the Raw Style

If you want cleaner, simpler results without too much AI creativity, use the --style raw option.

🖼️ Prompt with raw style:
/imagine forest in the style of watercolor painting --style raw

This reduces extra visual flourishes and keeps the result minimal.

Control the View (Perspective)

You can also tell MidJourney how to show your subject — from above, below, close up, etc.

👁️ Prompt with a specific perspective:
/imagine forest in the style of watercolor painting, with a bird's eye view

Changing the viewpoint adds depth and variety to your art.

Adjust the Lighting

Lighting can completely change the mood. Want golden hour glow or soft morning light? Just add that into your prompt.

☀️ Prompt with lighting:
/imagine a forest in the style of watercolor painting, with a bird's eye view and soft morning light

Try different times of day or lighting styles to set the perfect tone.

Final Thoughts

With just a few tweaks, your MidJourney prompts can go from average to eye-catching. Mix and match style, perspective, and light to create something truly your own.
